Book Description
"Letters from Mayhem" is an artist book consisting of 26 duotone watercolors by Roger Andersson, each depicting one letter of the alphabet. Accompanied by a fragmentary text by poet Albert Mobilio, the book is printed on heavy board in the format of a children's ABC primer. Each letter is embedded in a fairytale setting in which wispy long-haired teenagers lie around stoned, sniffing glue, listening to heavy metal, and so on. Full of messages hidden within plants, ponds, and clouds, Andersson's drawings and Mobilio's text evoke a soft nostalgia for childhood tempered by images of soft-edged romantic decadence.
Time Out New York:
"It may look like an oversize board book, but this is not your toddler's ABCs. In this Swedish artist's subversive -- and exquisite -- lexicon, K is for Krazy glue, tubes of which litter the ground and M, cobbled together from cigarette butts, is for Marlboro. The book reproduces Andersson's watercolors, all in a shimmery blue that suggests Bic ink eyed through a veil of smoke. Think Arthur Rackham as tenth-grade stoner."
